ASSESSMENT & DIAGNOSIS

The most important part of an initial Physiotherapy consult is a thorough and comprehensive assessment. This will include an in-depth history of your condition, any relevant medical history and a orthopaedic physical examination.
We will also go over any referrals and previous tests or scans that you may have.

DRY NEEDLING

Dry Needling is a technique that involves placing acupuncture needles directly into muscle fibers. This helps tight and knotty muscles to relax. It can be a very effective treatment for tension and pain as it allows us to treat muscles that are deep under layers of tissue. Dry needling works through the following mechanisms:

  1. Increased blood flow to the muscle fibers and surrounding tissues due to a process known as vasodilation.

  2. Stimulation of the nerve ending that control the muscles. Biopsy studies have shown that dry needling directly effects the neurotransmitters at the neuromuscular junction (connection between the nerve and the muscle fibers). As the neutrotransimtters normalize, the muscles can return to normal function and contract/ relax smoothly.

Dry needling is not for everyone and is considered an invasive technique. Your physiotherapist will discuss this at length with you and provide you with written consent forms to better understand the risk/ reward involved.

SOFT TISSUE MASSAGE

Soft tissue massage involves the treatment of superficial muscles to help reduce tension and relieve pain. It works by increasing blood flow to the skin and surrounding muscles. This is why you may become red and flushed at the site of massage. Massage also mechanically stimulates the nerve endings within the skin and muscle fibers in a process known as neuromodulation. This leads to a cascade of effects through the nervous system that reduces pain and tension.

MANUAL THERAPY

Manual therapy is a broad term that encompasses a variety of mobilization and manipulation techniques directed at various joints within the spine and limbs. Pain and injury can lead to a tightening of the connective tissue and muscles around joints. Manual therapy aims to reduce this tension with the goal of restoring flexibility and range of motion
